Yoga for a Strength and Mobility

This is an all levels yoga class designed to help strengthen muscles, bones and joints; improve flexibility; build stamina; relieve stress; and provide mental and relaxation benefits. Small hand held weights (optional) will be incorporated into this practice.

This practice will help to:
Improve muscle strength – strong muscles help to preserve and maintain healthy bone density. The main function of the muscular system is movement, but it also helps stabilize our joints, maintain our posture and generate heat during activity. Healthy muscles let you move freely and keep your body strong. 
Improve bone density – Bone loss is extremely common among individuals over the age of 30. Studies show that yoga helps to improve bone density. One study involved individuals with normal bone density. Participants engaged in a 10 minute yoga routine each day. As a result, they experienced an 85% increase in bone density in the spine and hip.
Prevent loss of cartilage.
Improve range of motion of the joints by improving muscle flexibility.
Increase the amount of synovial fluid in the joints to keep them moving smoothly. Without enough synovial fluid, joints tend to grind, leading to joint pain and arthritis. Tendons and ligaments tend to function significantly better as a result of a yoga practice. Not only can yoga improve the functioning of joints in healthy people, but it can help to reduce symptoms of tendonitis.

If you miss a class, you are welcome to make it up in any of our other classes, as long as space allows. Classes must be made up during the 8 week session. You are welcome to join a class at anytime.
